Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

aka Cabin Update -

We drove up just for the day today because we knew our builder had been working up there the past couple of weeks, and our curiosity got the best of us. We haven't been getting picture updates from our neighbors Bill and Phyllis, which we thought was a little odd, given that Bill was quite adamant that he would keep us posted on the goings-on. The weather has been cold and snowy, though, and we didn't want to ask for fear of imposing. As we drove past their place on our way out, we found it for sale. They are an old retired couple, and I certainly hope they haven't taken ill. If anyone is looking for a beautiful rustic mountain property, check out the listing: http://www.jerristorie.com/Listing/VirtualTour.aspx?ListingID=1571642

It's looking more and more like a house! The log stack is completely finished; what they're working on now is the roof. The first few beams are up, as is the LVL beam. (OK, I admit I had no idea what this was, either. Steve said it's the big beam that runs the center length of the roof.)

This picture gives you a good sense of what the you'll see looking out the front from the loft. There will be French doors below and a large trapezoidal window above on either side of the fireplace.
There's a double window at the back of the loft. This area will make a great reading nook. We were looking out the window talking about it when we saw a wild turkey roaming around up the mountain a little bit. I had my camera tucked inside of my jacket because it was snowing heavily, big, wet snow, and I didn't want it getting too wet. By the time I pulled it out and turned it on, the turkey was walking behind a big boulder, and he never did come back for a full body shot. Probably didn't help that Steve started gobbling.

What I find interesting during this whole process are the intermediate construction steps, i.e., the boards and scaffolds and bolts that hold it together until it is all together.

Dude, I think you may have another unauthorized commentor here (see above).

Ok, I clicked on the link to see your neighbor's house. The property is beautiful but the house is not exactly my style. If I had the money, I'd definitely buy it and fix it up. Would be cool to be your neighbor in such a place. By the way, there was no price listed on the slideshow link. What's it going for?

Oh, and by the way - I laughed a good hearty belly laugh when I read your comment about Steve's gobbling scaring the WILD TURKEY away. I could just picture him gobbling and strutting around the yard. Too funny. I guess he did it because he's more of a Jim Beam kinda guy.
